Hilarious paranoid bollocks from the Burzynski camp

This WordPress blog may not last long, since it probably violates their terms of service. It’s a corker. No common failure of internet debate is absent – even the classic Godwin’s Law is there. Dr. Paul Morgan characterised it as “like the death rattle for Burzynski shills everywhere”; I think that’s a fair assessment.

The TL:DR version of this post is right at the bottom: watch James E. Rothman’s Nobel lecture and see how he credits the work of others, going back over a century, in leading to the discovery for which he himself won the Nobel Prize, and form which others will no doubt develop further understanding. Science is not done by “brave maverick” types working in isolation.

The prime fallacy is the Pharma Shill Gambit, i.e. appeal to motives. Appeal to motives is fallacious even when the motives aren’t pure fantasy – in the pharma shill gambit, they are just that.

The irony of Burzynski shills accusing skeptics of astroturfing is delicious. For decades, Burzynski has been relying on the Burzynski Patient Group as a source of anecdotes of cure. As Bob Blaskiewicz in particular has found, many of those patients turn out to be either untraceable or (more commonly) already dead of the cancers Burzynski supposedly “cured”. Whipping up supporters into “grass roots” campaigns, often by falsely asserting that Burzynski has a cure, is a repeated feature of the Burzynski shills.

Double points for hiding your identity (and thus any conflict of interest) when accusing others of hiding the identity of their supposed secret sponsor.

UK’s Dianthus Medical (Adam Jacobs) PAID Pharma consultant shill & professional Astroturfer against any new competing science and technology, primarily on twitter — pretends he does it without getting paid!

Using terms like “rape” to relate to a life-saving scientist isn’t uncommon either:

Really? Burzynski is neither a life-saver nor a scientist, so no evidence is presented of the latter claim; the former is plainly true: nobody in the UK would pay anybody to rubbish Burzynski, because Burzynski is doing such a great job of this himself.

More on “Doctor” Paul Morgan insulting people on twitter when he isn’t “practicing medicine” (DAILY MAIL, UK) – from University Hospital of Wales

“Doctor” Paul Morgan of University Hospital of Wales resigns in August of 2013 over falsified medical journal scandal (Higher Education Times) It seems “Dr.” Paul Morgan of the University of Wales is a QUACK and a CHARLATAN – in addition to being an agent of lies, propaganda, and outright hate and bigotry, all while making a paycheck.

Oops! First, Paul Morgan is indeed a doctor. Second, he was exonerated of any responsibility. He resigned, according to accounts, because of difficulties with a questionable restructuring.

And according to Rhys, this is not the same Paul Morgan. It is, after all, a common name especially in Wales.

Update: Paul Morgan the skeptic vs. Paul Morgan the former Dean of the medical school. Thanks to @MedTek for links, @DrPaulMorgan hadn’t yet got round to responding to my question (he has now), but I’m not the one running headlong in the wrong direction; I’d have fact checked, but things like facts and evidence don’t seem to figure in the world of Burzynski shills. I think it comes from the top. Can we say “schoolboy error” everybody?

Guy Chapman, another professional Astroturfer against anything of scientific innovation that competes with the status quo, pretends to not know how to spell “astroturfing“.

Big Pharma! WHERE’S MY MONEY you bastards!

The loon has even less evidence for this than Burzynski has of a cancer cure.

This tweet above is quite comical. “Guy Chapman” is the “Editor in Chief” and lead Gate Keeper to the “Burzynski Clinic” Wikipedia page. He is a dangerous and well-paid sociopath, much like Orac/Gorski and Bob Blaskiewicz. If you are wondering why the Wikipedia Page on “Burzynski” reads like a North Korea Tourist brochure, ask Guy Chapman.

Easily checked. The article has hundreds of edits, most of them not me. I think my most significant input has been to move the article on Burzynski, to “Burzynski clinic”, because as a biography it failed our very firm policy on biographies. It was about the ethical problems with his trials and treatments, not about him. I don’t visit the page often, and am not active there in an admin capacity for obvious reasons.

On the subject of astroturfing, who was spamming links to burzynskimovie.com?

“The Skeptics” are racist Notice PHIL HARRIS’ tweet.

phil_harris

The context is pretty clear: journals from Asia have a long history of publishing credulous content about alternative treatments (example). This is cultural and not racial. Asian scientists have an excellent record in US research centres especially, and research conducted in Asia is published in decent journals too.

Racism is also common with the personalities the industry hires to carry out this dirty work. Sort of like hiring a professional hit man, these are not nice people. Imagine how deranged a human being must be to sit around all day getting paid to insult cancer patients on twitter and anyone practicing the concept of “thinking for yourself”. It’s right out of the policies of Mein Kampt.

Hurrah! Godwin’s Law. We win.

Bob Blaskiewicz bragging just before he and his paid wanna-be Nazi cronies apparently hacked the Burzynski Clinic webpage.

That’s hilarious. Bob’s a great guy, but a complete putz technically. Seriously, he doesn’t even understand how to accept transfer of a domain name! There never was any evidence at all that skeptics hacked Burzynski’s site, hackers are equal opportunity assholes, they don’t care whose site they hack or whose paranoid fantasies they might support by doing it.

Robert “Bob” Blaskiewicz is an unbridled sociopath who sadly teaches English to children (if their parents only knew) – which is hilarious that he claims to teach “science” (lying pathologically is a part of the package of a sociopath like Bob)- he spends all day, every day, 7 days a week, nearly 24 hours a day following internet alerts to fight anyone online who finds out about Dr. Burzynski, a Burzynski patient, or anyone that dares talk about stepping outside of the status quo in regards to trying to save their own life (think Holocaust prisoner seeing an open door to the bunker, and Robert “Bob” Blaskiewicz is the guy that is secretly working for Hitler that says “oh no, you need to stay here, you will be fine if you stay here.” If you encounter this lunatic online, steer clear, unless you are ready to enter a realm of nonsensical, illogical, crazy neo-nazi style fireworks of fear, hate and unbridled bigotry.

It’s odd that nobody who actually knows Bob would ever think this. Valid criticisms of Bob include: a slight tendency to shoot from the lip, chronic Tigger syndrome, and posting under the influence of David Gorski (i.e. never using one word where five will do). He is, however, pathologically honest and bends over backwards not to make the pain Burzynski causes, worse. I have seen him privately chastise people for crass comments to Burzynski’s victims.

Aside from the epic Godwin fail, this is not just spiteful, it’s so completely at odds with the facts that it becomes useless as criticism. Nobody who has ever encountered Bob could ever take this comment seriously – whihc is just as well, since that will probably save you from a well-deserved defamation suit.

Robert “Bob” Blaskiewicz is also the lunatic behind the cancer death list called “the other burzynski patient group” – He’s a very unstable and sick person.

No, he’s not unstable or sick. He’s angry. You did that. Well done.

Skeptics are nasty name-callers

LOLWUT? Did you really write that after what you wrote above? We may be done here…

Peter Bowditch aka “Rat Bags” is one of the meanest, sociopaths out there on the internet in regards to harassing people suffering from cancer. Dr. David Gorski aka Orac and Blob Blaskiewicz do not hold a candle to this guy.

Bowditch would be the first person to acknowledge that he has a mean streak. It comes form years of dealing with the murderous fuckwittery of the Australian (anti)Vaccination Network, including having to fight off attempts by its repugnant imported American Svengali, Meryl Dorey, to use the courts to silence him.

Orac/Gorski and Blob wish they would have been a part of Hitler’s SS brigade—but Peter Bowditch, he wishes he could be SATAN himself.

Bob Blaskiewicz is Polish. David Gorski has spent a lot of time debunking holocaust denialism. I don’t think either of them would want to join the SS. I do think Bowditch would probably enjoy being Satan, if only so he could burn Meryl Dorey in a fiery pit.

Rhys Morgan is the teenage son of Dr. Paul Morgan (listed above). It isn’t uncommon for parents to train their children early on to become a life-long paid bigot.

This is the same Rhys Morgan who was threatened by Marc Stephens, claiming to be acting on behalf of the Burzynski Clinic. You probably ought to keep quiet about the teenagers you’ve tried to harass. And Rhys is not rolling in pharma money; he had to tap me for a few quid to buy a domain name for his nascent spare-time business a year or so back. Rhys is a bit of a legend because he took one for the team on Miracle Mineral a few years back. His main interest is video games. Seriously, check @RhysMorgan on Twitter.

“Dr.” David Gorski is the highest paid of them all. Writing under two names #1 ”Dr.” David Gorski (where he pretends to not be a hateful bigot); and #2 “ORAC” where under his fake name, unleashes a fury of paid bigotry and hate unmatched by the late Adolf Hitler.

Again with the scare quotes (Gorski, unlike Burzynski, is a board-certified oncologist) and the Godwin fail.

They are well-organized, much like teh Westboro Church are well-organized

Westboro are not well-organised. They are shambolic, much as the Burzynski shills are shambolic.

Picking out people who have a long history of speaking out agianst bigotry, and calling them bigots, just makes you look stupid. So does placing scare quotes around earned credentials.

Come to think of it though, this does have some familiar common ground with another form of aggressive religious zealotry: the “Church” of Scientology are, like the Burzynski shills, fond of shouting “bigot” whenever anyone fails to accept their version of events as the sole correct version, as John Sweeney (@JohnSweeneyRoar) makes clear in his very amusing talk on the Church of Fear. Hence the famous “exploding tomato incident”.

Just a small collection of the ranting tweets of hate from the Astroturf campaign known as “The Skeptics” towards scientific innovation that competes with the status quo, with a heavy focus on Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski and any of his patients.

Gorski, especially, writes in favour of innovation and has heavily criticised the status quo when it has been wrong. See for example his criticisms of the Halstead radical mastectomy.

The Cancer Industry relies on such campaigns coupled with their Guerrilla-style internet vandalism tactics to highjack the search engines with slanted, biased, straw man, and often falsified information. You will notice they will never address a root argument. They rely only on bigoted and Chauvinist remarks, feeding on the fear in people – instead of rational and reasonable discussion. It is only a matter of time before they begin picketing the funerals of cancer patients.

Bullshit. If the cancer industry existed (which it doesn’t), it would rely on much more sinister and effective machinations. Nobody goes to an oncologist because of social media comments, astroturfing on the internet is used to attract victims to quacks, not to promote actual medicine There may be isolated examples, but no evidence has ever been presented of any significant payments to any blogger, tweep or other social media activist to “boost” mainstream medicine. Why would they even do that? They have the fucking hospitals! The infrastructure of medicine is gigantic, a few individuals here and there are a spit in the ocean compared with the effect of seeing all those health centres, hospitals and so on in every single major town in the world.

I read this quote on The Burzynski Movie Facebook page recently, and though it was quite fitting for this post:

“Taking one simple glance at history—using simple common sense—we will find that everything of scientific innovation has come from the fringe, and directly threatened the status quo at the start. From The Wright Brothers to Steve Jobs – they were all once considered “fringe mavericks” until their efforts merged into the mainstream and became a participant in the “status quo”. The status quo is there to create its own legion of followers, while only those who dare to step out of it and take a risk with something that could change it—those are the only people in human history that have ever contributed to changing it. These innovators didn’t listen to anyone except their own hearts and minds—while ignoring all the noise around them.” (this quote was apparently film director Eric Merola’s quote)

As Carl Sagan said: The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

In science, the transition form being on the fringes to being accepted is achieved through the publication of solid science and credibel evidence. Look at Marshall and Warren, for example. They overturned two entrenched beliefs: ulcers are caused by stress, and bacteria can’t live in an acid environment. They did it by patiently and doggedly publishing good science, and building on the good science published by others.

Virtually no discovery in medicine has been originated by a single person and relies only on their own brilliant insights.

Watch James E. Rothman’s Nobel lecture and see how he credits the work of tohers, going back over a century, in leading to the discovery for which he himself won the Nobel Prize, and form which others will no doubt develop further understanding.

That’s how science is done. Rothman is a character, a larger than life personality, but he is intellectually honest and generous in his honesty.

  1. Nice takedown, Guy.

Just one small clarification. When Merola says:

Using terms like “rape” to relate to a life-saving scientist isn’t uncommon either

what he doesn’t mention is that it was nothing to do with Burzynski. Apart from the fact that, as you correctly point out, Burzynski is neither a life-saver or a scientist, the rape comment wasn’t about Burzynski. It was about other physicians in Texas. The Tweet was making the general point that there is something seriously wrong with physician licensing in Texas if the TMB tolerates both physicians who rape people and Burzynski.

The original tweet, so that you can follow the links and see the context, is here.

We can only speculate about whether Merola either a) didn’t read my Tweet and just assumed it was all about Burzynski, b) knew it wasn’t about Burzynski but thought it might be fun to make it look like I was accusing him of being a rapist, or c) thinks that the rapist doctors who are completely unconnected to Burzynski are in fact life-saving scientists.

  2. Hi Guy,
Nice article! Eric Merola has completely lost the plot this time. I wonder if the cognitive dissonance of seeing his hero, dear old Stanislaw Burzynski, being caught with his pants well and truly down by the FDA.
I’m afraid that while I did find myself in the Daily Fail on one ignominious occasion, everything else Merola attributes to me is completely wrong. Not only does he manage to libel me in that article, but also my namesake, Professor B. Paul Morgan (former Dean of Medicine, Cardiff University). Prof. Morgan was involved in a research fraud scandal but was completely exonerated http://retractionwatch.com/2013/04/10/cardiff-clears-dean-of-misconduct-allegations-but-finds-former-researcher-falsified-images/
He subsequently resigned as Dean due to unhappiness with organisational issue within Cardiff University. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/cardiff-university-scientist-paul-morgan-2590760

As for what my employer thinks of me, try http://www.cardiffandvaleuhb.wales.nhs.uk/news/28713 and http://www.cardiffandvaleuhb.wales.nhs.uk/news/28850
In that second article I am pictured talking to Mark Drakeford, Health Minister in the Welsh Government.
Merola is a fool. Worthy of comparison to that other fool Marc Stephens, but at least Burzynski was able to fire Stephens for incompetence and doing way more harm than good to Burzynski’s reputation. Burzynski must be regretting either of them any near his nice little earner.

    1. Thanks, I was pretty sure but didn’t want to make the same sort of error in the opposite direction :-)

Whether or not it’s Merola who created the blog (I suspect that there are one or two even more deranged individuals in play, one of whom is the batshit insane “Didymus Judas Thomas“, it does seem clear that the Burzynski camp have completely lost the plot, after struggling through most of 2013 trying to control the Google feed and own the message, the USA Today piece has dealt their propaganda machine a body blow, and I hope it’s a fatal one.

I don’t even care that much whether Slippery Stan is forced to retire, or whether he cleans up his act and just stops conning vulnerable people, what matters is that the three decades and more when propaganda has served in place of facts, is at an end. And the Burzynski shills played a part in making that happen: if they had been nice, they would not have stirred up so much action. Irony piled on irony.
