Reading Bach Choir at Dorchester Abbey (JJ is off stage)
Welcome to my little corner of the internet.

Changes are afoot! I am about done migrating to DreamHost and am beginning to use my blog for more volatile content. There you'll also find links to me on Twitter, Facebook and so on.

Here are some things that may have changed or been updated recently:

Concerts

JanJoost van Elburg
  • Schubert, Gute Nacht and Die Post from Winterreise, Peppard church with Marion's students. This went well, I am told. It is time to recognise that my voice suits the art song repertoire.
  • Reading Bach Choir churches tour also went well, with the unaccompanied and distinctly tricky Ton de Leeuw delivered well, or so it sounded to me.
  • APO choir has a repertoire weekend in August, which should be a lot of fun. Sadly I will be in the US that weekend on business.

Reading Bach Choir members: here is the obvious link as promised. Note that this login is just for the choir members' private area and not for the wiki (for boring technical reasons).

Cycling

Cycling is a means of transport, a form of recreation and a sport. It's the most efficient form of transport on the planet. Some people have, through creative accounting, tried to show that cycling is as "polluting" as a small, economical family car, but this is essentially sophistry as it includes all the CO2 emitted by the cyclist but ignores the fact that most people need to breathe anyway, that the growing and consumption of food is more or less carbon neutral (give or take the cost of transport, which also applies to oil of course), and that the distance travelled per unit effort expended is greater than for any other mode of transport. More...

Also...

  • The fastest cyclist on the planet is Sam Whittingham, with a new record of 82.3mph.
  • The record for Land's End to John O'Groats by bike is 41 hours
  • Velovision is a quirky bike magazine, nothing ordinary in there!

Music resources:

  • ChoralWiki, the original and best source of public domain choral music.
  • Mutopia has a wider brief than ChoralWiki.
  • IMSLP (International Music Score Library Project), does as the name suggests.
  • GOpera, Margo Briessinck's personal site has good material on lieder and Winterreise in particular.
