My father is a Licentiate of the City and Guilds of London Institute, and has a Higher National Diploma. He worked hard for these qualifications, completing evening classes while working during the week as an electrician and at weekends as a photographer's assistant. He rose to the top of the Senior Lecturer scale at St Albans College (since renamed Oaklands College for no obvious reason), and was rather dismissive of those graduate entries to the profession brought with them high salaries and low expertise.

His mantra, often repeated was: BSc is bullshit, MSc is more shit and PhD is piled higher and deeper.

I have since learned that while this is not always true, it is by no means always (or even especially often) false...
