Death on the Streets - cars and the mythology of road safety, by Bob Davis. A well researched indictment of the road "safety" lobby and the pernicious effect it has had on the actual safety of our roads, counting as a safety benefit the creation of streets so dangerous that people are too scared to use them. Often polemical, wryly amusing and packed with the sort of references and data which make arguments with speeding apologists and the road "safety" lobby not only possible but winnable.
Believed out of print, but as Bob says: a few rare unsigned copies may be available. The author can be reached by email - send me a feedback form below - and will probably be able to set you up with a copy.
This, along with risk and Hillman and Whitelegg's One False Move, makes essential reading for anyone looking to really understand road safety.
