This is where disclaimers and similar weasel-proofing live.
PrivacyYou can trust me, I'm a cyclist. I am a sysadmin and hate spammers so much that you can rely on my never releasing anybody's address to those scum (see below). So, if you fill in yur email address in a contact form you can believe that I won't abuse it. I mught abuse you, but only if you ask for it.
CopyrightThe pages on this site have copyright statements asserting my copyright. That's because I wrote most of this stuff myself and it's hard work sometimes. Where I've re-used or quoted something I usually remember to attribute it, but not always. If you think I've violated your copyright, or that of someone you hold dear, let me know using the feedback link and I'll correct it.
Although I assert my copyright I'm very happy for you to use anything I've said, with the following provisos: (1) you may not use my text in any for-profit context; (2) please let me know where you intend to use it (e.g. url); and (3) please ask first. Where possible link back here - I change my mind and update things all the time.
SpammersSpammers are scum and, alone among criminals, deserve the death penalty. Drowned in a vat of bullshit is the only appropriate punishment. Any email address I publish on this site is for the sole purpose of contacting me in connection with the business of the site, for example to enter into dialoge about the opinions expressed.
Here is my policy on spam, which I urge you to emulate:
- I never buy anything from a spammer. Even if I was going to buy somethign from them before the spam, I'm not going to after the spam arrives. Reputable companies do not spam, spamming is inherently disreputable. Furthermore, I will urge my friends, relations, and everyone I know never to deal with that company ever under any circumstances at all ever. And if it's a big firm I'll let them know that.
- The definition of spam is, and shall remain, unsolicited commercial email. Unsolicited means, as it always did, that I never asked you to send it and you never asked if you could. Simply buying an address from a list vendor does not imply permission - although it is theoretically possible that an honest list vendor may exist at some point in the indeterminate future, if we do not have an existing relationship then emailing me to try to sell me something is spam. Disclaimers saying "this is not spam" are lies and merely compound the offence.
- Where appropriate, I will complain to the ISP hosting the spammer's website - spamming is a violation of AUP for most reputable ISPs. This is especially tthe case where the spam has been circulated by bandwidth theft.
LegalAll this stuff was written and is hosted in the United Kingdom. UK law applies. You want to sue me, do it in Reading, Berkshire.
