A long time ago in a newsgroup far far away a newbie introduced himself in what must probably be the worst possible way: an off-topic spam full of SHOUTING with the title LOOK!!!!! And not the Look who make bike components, either. Or so the legend goes. Actually John Shackford of Thornbury (for it was he) had first posted in January that year. And it was another For Sale ad! But at least it was for a bike. John then went on to top-post in HTML, and various other net.offences, which led to a brief flame war. John has been an occasional voice since then, and the last item offered for sale (a Moulton AM) was refreshingly bike-related.
The camper was, to be fair, not entirely off topic, as he had apparently used the van in question for numerous cycle tours; a camper van is actualy a pretty good base for cycle touring, and not a bad support vehicle either, as it is usually equipped with the essentials for tea-making. But since when has uk.rec.cycling let the facts get in the way of a good in-joke? |
